Volunteers need a valid Palatine Public Library District card. We are unable to accommodate court-ordered or court-supervised community service.  

Opportunities for Adults

These positions are open to residents 16 years old and up.


Circulation Volunteers (3 Opportunities)


Location: Main Library
Date/time:   Tuesday mornings 9a-12 noon, Tuesday evenings 5-9p; Thursday evenings 5-9p, and Friday afternoons, 12 noon-6p.
Duration: Ongoing or Short Term

Assist the Circulation Department by shelving holds, casing cd's and dvd's, and assisting staff with other tasks as necessary.  Volunteer must commit to volunteering two hours each week.  This opportunity requires reaching, bending, squatting, and kneeling to complete the tasks.  Three opportunities available.  Volunteer must pass a short Circulation quiz in order to be placed as a Circulation Volunteer.  Short term volunteers may apply for these opportunities.    


Technical Services Opening Volunteer (3 Opportunities) 

Location: Main Library
Date/time: Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Duration: Ongoing or Short Term

We have three opportunities to help our Technical Services department open and sort packages of new items.  Remove shrink wrap from audiovisual materials, unbox new books and place items in order on a book cart.  Must have the ability to push/pull up to 50 pounds and lift and carry up to 20 pounds.  Short term volunteers may apply for these opportunities.   


Technical Services Book Nook Volunteer 

Location: Main Library
Date/time: Mondays 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Duration: Ongoing or Short Term

Help our Technical Services department stock and organize our ongoing book sale in the Book Nook.  Move items from donations and discards to the Book Nook shelves.  Front and straighten items on the shelves.  Remove long standing items from the Book Nook.  Must have the ability to push/pull up to 50 pounds and lift and carry up to 20 pounds.  Short term volunteers may apply for this opportunity.

Opportunities for Teens

High School Student Branch Volunteer

Assist the North Hoffman Estates Branch on Mondays from 4:00-6:00 pm.  The Branch Volunteer shelves books, shelf-reads to ensure books are in proper order and assists staff as needed. The North Hoffman Branch is located at 3600 Lexington Drive, Hoffman Estates, IL.


Teen Advisory Board

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) meets monthly during the school year and members assist at various programs throughout the year.  Applications are available in July/August each year through our Popular Materials Department only.  Please check the newsletter for further information.
